Clearly, men dominate the viewership of Rick and Morty. One potential cause of this could be who writes the show itself; there were no female writers until the third season. When female writers were finally hired, they were harassed on social media by angry male viewers. Nonetheless, Harmond and Roiland look at the addition of female writers in a positive light. They applaud the importance of the gender balance so that no one has to represent an identity group in the writer's room. Harmond also observed that the female characters, Summer and Beth, were given more complex story lines and did not fall into gender roles when female writers were in the room. However, perhaps it should not have taken two seasons for Harmond and Roiland to make this staff change. It helps to look at the writers, but perhaps more importantly is to look at what they do with the characters. Writers and creators can discuss any ideology they want in an interview, but the characters are the ones that the audience actually sees.
