Rick Sanchez is Morty's grandfather, father of Beth. He is living with his daughter's family after having been absent for a large part of her life. He is an old-school mad scientist, lab coat and all. His frequent burps are due to his constant sips from his flask. He is seemingly all-knowing and can get out of any dilemma with his wits and futuristic tools.

While his old-school mad scientist characterization is not a common one for an adult TV series, he does follow into certain stereotypes of masculinity. For one, he has a strong aversion to being emotional. The rare moments when he shares something about himself often end in a fart-joke or the twist that the whole story was a simulation. Secondly, his solution to most of the dilemmas he finds himself in is violence. While the type of violence in this show is unique with freeze rays and guns that turn the victim into a worm-like monster, it is violence nonetheless. Furthermore, barely a scene goes by without Rick telling a crude sexual joke, often at the expense of women. Even as a 70 year old grandfather, he falls into the category of the "mook".
