Morty's 17 year old sister evolves a lot throughout the three seasons. At first, she's a classic teenage girl; she whines incessantly, hates her family, and cares singularly about boys and her own popularity. However, as the seasons go on, and especially with the addition of female writers, Summer becomes more complex as her story lines become less focused on her gender. Her role is complicated, neither completely progressive nor altogether stereotypical.

This video clip exemplifies how the show consistently treats serious topics like feminism. It is true that Summer makes a point about the idiocy of her grandfather's rules about taking girls on adventures, but she then has to be saved by her grandfather, who then makes a crude sex joke.
