What does nihilism have to do with Rick and Morty?
Nihilism inherently leads to dark humor. If nothing matters, why even try to be sensitive to emotions or cultural norms? Rick barely goes an episode without referring to the meaninglessness of life—the show is built on the idea of nihilism. People may watch Rick and Morty as some form of escapism, but its use of nihilism really just lets the writers poke fun at women and animators draw a planet made of farting butts. The show has found an interesting balance; while often the nihilistic comments are comedic, sometimes it hits profound notes and makes the viewer wonder: why do I value what I value, why do I believe the things I believe? However, the nihilism in Rick and Morty is mostly dangerous. For one, it lures viewers into being thoughtless. It also allows the plot and characters to be cemented into the stereotypes that define them and for little thought by the writers of how to avoid these traps.
